A Little Bit of History: 

Since the days of colloquialisms like 'light in the loafers' and 'confirmed bachelor', straight men have been worried about being perceived as anything other than rampant heterosexuals. The question of whether something innocuous makes them look gay has been dominating their inner monologue for decades.

Luckily (?), the internet gave them the opportunity to tap into the hive-mind of random strangers online, and it became more common for men to externalise the thoughts they once kept to themselves.

Though men had been asking versions of this question for years, the format as we know it was born in August 2017 when a particular tweet thread went viral on the social media platform formerly-known-as Twitter.
