a closer look at a surprisingly efficient way of mocking fragile masculinity....
QUEER WORD
FELLAS, IS IT GAY…?

What It Means:
A meme format used to mock extreme masculine insecurity, where men question whether completely mundane activities (sleeping, eating vegetables, wiping properly) might somehow make them seem gay.
Let’s Use It In A Sentence:
‘Fellas, is it gay to drink water with a slice of lemon in it?’ Derek asked the group chat. He may have tacked a crying-laughing emoji at the end, but the question itself was asked with the utmost sincerity.
A Little Bit of History:
Since the days of colloquialisms like 'light in the loafers' and 'confirmed bachelor', straight men have been worried about being perceived as anything other than rampant heterosexuals. The question of whether something innocuous makes them look gay has been dominating their inner monologue for decades.
Luckily (?), the internet gave them the opportunity to tap into the hive-mind of random strangers online, and it became more common for men to externalise the thoughts they once kept to themselves.
Which is where fellas, is it gay? comes in.
Though men had been asking versions of this question for years, the format as we know it was born in August 2017 when a particular tweet thread went viral on the social media platform formerly-known-as Twitter. The structure stuck, and suddenly everyone was using it to mock masculine anxiety by pushing it to absurd extremes.
Is it gay to eat a banana? To wash your legs in the shower? To have a birthday? To love a dog? To drink water?
The more ridiculous, the better.

So, to celebrate the fact that straight men are leaning on each other for support (which is a bit gay, no?), I've collected some of the funniest examples I could find to give you a bit of a giggle today.
